Watermelon Cleanse Day 3

Gotta love the third day, first of all, if you can make it 3 days without solid food, you will wake up on the 4th day wondering if you really need it.

I’m not preaching ‘breathterian’ here, where you live on breath alone, or the power of the sun, just sharing a reality I learned over 10 years ago when I did my very first 3 and then 10 day fast. The first 3 days are the hardest. And if you have been following me in the last few weeks you have noticed that even starting one can be a challenge on that very first day.

Well, on this 3rd day, I practiced in the morning, taught and then surfed for about an hour, followed by a lunch meeting, where I had a carrot, apple and ginger juice due to the fact that they did not serve any watermelon drinks. I figured I was getting good nutrients with the choice I had made and that I was probably good for the cleanse.

I had not planned on the surf being so nice and calm after teaching and was thrown off schedule a little, though I had plenty of watermelon juice and water when I came home.

I did suffer from intense cravings toward sunset, probably watching my wife and son indulge in some gluten free chocolate cookies. Upon arriving home, Bibiana made me a banana, coconut milk, chia seed, cacao powder and other super food ingredients smoothie to sooth my craving, which did the trick pretty well, so well in fact that I asked her to make another one two hours later before we watched the latest episode of True Blood.

It might not have been pure watermelon and water for 3 days, but it sure came close to it.

How am I feeling? pretty good, outside of the intense cravings at the end of the day I was feeling pretty good.

I did notice I was a little tired and almost fatigued around sunset time, and found it hard to think about going back out to the beach, though the pending storm and lack of good surf could have been other reasons.

I plan on attempting my fall 30 day liquid fast which I do every year (though lats year I was unable to sustain more than a 7 day fast for some reason, though that is a topic for a different blog).

I have been doing fall and spring 30 day liquid fasts for 7 years (excluding last year), as a Pitta-Kapha body type I do not loose that much weight and the idea that you loose tons of weight disappears after day 10, at which point the experience of not eating is closer to spiritual practice rather than an ego (weight loosing is about an image and thus fueled by the ego) booster.

Somewhat like Yin Yoga, where the first 10 minutes are about getting used to the posture and the connective tissue opens up, where the time between 10-20 minutes (according to Dr. Motoyama energy cycles in the body in 20 minutes segments) is purely meditative.

Watermelon Cleanse Day 2

Watermelon might be in season down here in Wilmington, NC where I am spending my summer, but not all watermelons taste the same. My wife prefers the organic small size watermelon she picks at the local co-op, where I don’t mind buying any watermelon from any store, as organic is organic, whether at the co-op or Harris Teeter.

I must preach the benefits of organic purely from the stand point of toxins, and if you find that you are highly allergic you might want to start with changing your fruits and vegetables to only organic produce. Simple changes to your diet can take you from feeling down, sick or lethargic to feeling well, happy and content with the world around you.

I know this from personal experience, as well as from the clients I work with. Nutrition is truly your medicine, as we are what we eat.

Will I become a melon? not in 3 days. I do feel lighter, more focused, and my mood is high.

It will take more than 3 days to truly know the effects of the high vitamin dosages, though a 3 days watermelon fast is suppose to clean out the digestion, help the kidneys, and re-balance the hormones. Without medical supervision you will simply have to trust my words.

Watermelon Cleanse Take 2

It took me a few weeks to muster the desire, as well as the mental force to give the watermelon cleanse a second chance.

Your body truly knows, and this time my body was ready, eager even for a cleaning house. Maybe it was the glutinous summer I have been enjoying, maybe it was the long hours in a car driving around the East coast teaching and sharing, maybe it was just a personal desire to ‘Just Do It,’ what ever the sub-conscious reason is, I made it through the first day.

It was not even hard, between enjoying the day with a student who drove down from Raleigh for his weekend training (he is under my private 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training Course), doing Yin Yoga (to help release the tension from the 2 hour drive) and then power vinyasa (to put some fresh energy back into his system), we headed to the beach for some natural connection, though the winds were blowing hard, and the ocean was choppy and stormy.

I preceded to doze off on the sand, while he took a long walk up and down the coast. Probably the best choice on both our parts.

I was elated to note that I had no problem with my family eating a scrumptious meal, macrobiotic style, followed by a video on the Chakra System by Paul Grilley, who I respect very much and find that he truly shares amazing insights with the Yoga community, as well as staying true to the deeper spiritual aspects of Yoga.

I am also exploring in the next 30 days the effects of high dosages of Vitamin D (2000mg), Vitamin C (2000mg), Magnesium (1200mg), and Fish Oil (5000mg) daily to test their effect on energy, mental acuity and over all joint flexibility.
